Since 1981 Janet Balaskas has talked about « active Birth ». Her book draws on her professionnal knowledge in the active Birth Center in London.

In this book, she analyzes emotions in pregnant women; and following a global health system, she proposes a lot of advice, through text and pictures. Mother’s nutrition, breastfeeding, yoga and breathing exercices, meditation, relaxation, massage, osteopathy, foot reflexology, acupuncture, shiatsu, phytotherapy, Bach flowers, homeopathy, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and psychology became clear and understandable, and go naturally with the normal and healthy events of pregnancy and birth.

This book ends with advice for further reading and an alphabetical list of various maladies and corresponding remedies.
It’s an ideal present for a first pregnancy, but equally useful for subsequent ones. It helps to manage stress due to the pregnancy and what is often felt to be over-medicalization.
